Tony Orlando salutes our Veterans

NEW YORK CITY (77WABC) – On this 245th birthday of the Marine Corps., CEO and Owners of Red Apple Media and WABC Radio John and Margo Catsimatidis proudly honor our service men and women.  Also in attendance Tuesday, legendary music icon Tony Orlando.  To mark Veteran’s Day, WABC radio is asking Americans everywhere to tie a yellow ribbon around a tree, mailbox, wherever!

Decades later and Orlando’s melodic voice broke through the Manhattan traffic noise as he sang one of his many hits, “Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree,” for a group of Marines and media.

John Catsimatidis told reporters, “Make music not war! We need to back our men and women in uniform just like they have our backs always!”

Although this year’s Veteran’s Day Parade was canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic, smaller outdoor ceremonies like this one are being held.  On Veteran’s Day, WABC radio will also be honoring veterans on air all day long from 6am-6pm.

“We don’t have a parade but you do have us,” Orlando said proudly to the contingent of Marines who attended.

Chad Lopez, president of WABC radio and a veteran himself having served in the Navy aboard the USS Independence before working for the radio station, said he was proud to be able to honor fellow veterans.

“We really welcome the opportunity to honor veterans the way we are doing it, the way John is doing it today and I’m really proud to be part of it,” Lopez said.
