6-1-COUSIN-BRUCIE-ARTICLE
Hello Cousins!
They came from New Orleans and were destined to challenge The Beatles for the number one spot on the charts. The Dixie Cups formed the group
while they attended High School. They originally called themselves Little Miss and the Muffets.
Fortunately, they changed their name to The Dixie Cups before their first record was released – 1963.
The song that captured the music charts and toppled the Beatles from that top chart spot – was “Chapel of Love” by the Dixie Cups. Do you remember a hit song “You Talk To Much” by Joe Jones? He became the girls manager (which is another story-we’ll talk about it).
He managed to get the young gals a recording contract with Leiber and Stoller – this led to the release of their debut and biggest single “Chapel of Love”. The record sold more than 2 million copies – was awarded a Gold Disc and reached number 279 on Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time.
Our guest is Barbara Ann Hawkins an original and founding member of The Dixie Cups. She will visit the Cuz on WABC MUSICRADIO this Saturday 6/4.
One other note – I love their hit “Iko Iko”. Wait until you hear the story behind this record.
Welcome Barbara Ann Hawkins!
I will take requests and dedications live on-air! The call-in number is 800-848-9222. You can also call in for your chance to win Cousin Brucie merchandise such as a Cousin Brucie t-shirt and a Cousin Brucie hat as well as CDs and DVDs from my friends at Oldies.com.
