Look who’s coming to visit…… Peter Asher! Born in England, Peter is a multi-talented Artist – guitarist, singer, manager and record producer. When he was eight years old, he began working as a child actor, and appeared in several films.
He came into our lives in the ‘60s as the founding member of the British Invasion duo Peter and Gordon, before going on to a successful career as a manager and record producer. He met Gordon (Waller) while they both were pupils at a local elementary school. The boys began playing and singing together as a duo in cafes. Their first (and biggest) hit was the 1964 Lennon/McCartney song “A World Without Love”. Peter and Gordon disbanded in 1968 and Peter became the head of the A&R department at the Beatles’ Apple Records label, where he signed a then-unknown James Taylor and agreed to produce the singer-songwriter’s debut solo album. Peter was so convinced that “Sweet Baby James” had great star power that he resigned from Apple and moved to the United States and became James Taylor’s manager. He also became Linda Ronstadt’s manager. Peter achieved his greatest success producing a long string of multi-platinum albums for James Taylor, including “Sweet Baby James”, “JT and Flag”, and for Linda Ronstadt, “Heart Like a Wheel”, “Simple Dreams” and, “Living in the USA”.
In February 1995, Peter was named Senior Vice-President of Sony Music Entertainment. Eventually (2002), he left Sony and returned full-time to the management of artists’ careers. Peter was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2015 for services to the British music industry.
On Wednesday March 15, 2023 Peter will join an all-star cast and present “The Music of Paul McCartney” at Carnegie Hall NYC. All the proceeds from the concert will be distributed to several charities. For tickets – musicof.org
