Melanie was born in Astoria, Queens (NYC) and clinched her stardom performing at the Woodstock Festival in 1969. Woodstock was the inspiration for her first hit song, “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)”, The Woodstock audience lit candles, cigarette lighters and matches while she sang. The recording became a hit in the United States, Europe, Australia and Canada in 1970.
She was awarded Billboard’s No. 1 Top Female Vocalist award for 1972 and produced two gold albums and earned a gold single for “Brand New Key”. When Melanie became an official UNICEF Ambassador in 1972, she cancelled a world tour in favor of raising money for UNICEF.
