Hello Cousins!

Our Guest this week is Tommy Roe.

Tommy was born in Atlanta, Georgia. While he was in high school, he was a member of a local band and after graduation he was hired by General Electric soldering wires. Tommy was greatly influenced by Buddy Holly and his early records had that Rockabilly sound and energy with a “bubblegum” twist. He wrote a song about a girlfriend whose name was Freda.

A local record company wanted Tommy to record the song, but didn’t particularly like the name “Freda”. They said that it wouldn’t work. That day Tommy left the record company’s office and went home- feeling badly. When he arrived home – his Aunt Sheila was visiting his family. He always like Aunt Sheila- wait a minute, that’s it! “Sheila”… Tommy’s first hit – he was on his way.

During the 60’s Tommy Roe captured the hearts of teenie boppers all over the world. He toured and became a major star. His chart topping discography- “Sheila”, “Sweet Pea”(I love that song), “Everybody” “Hooray For Hazel”, “Dizzy” (number 1 on the US and UK charts), and let’s not forget “Jam Up and Jelly Tight.”

Tommy Roe was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and was recognized by The Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

He will be on stage with me at the PNC Garden State Arts Center on Thursday 6/8/23.

The best music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. I will take requests and dedications live on-air! The call-in number is 800-848-9222.
