Hey Cousins,
At Seventeen, she was Society’s Child – who is that person? And….she is our guest this week on WABC MUSICRADIO. Answer: Janis Ian
Janis was raised on a farm in New Jersey. She started her piano lessons when she was two and by the time she was a teenager, Janis was playing piano, the organ, French horn and guitar. When she was 14, she wrote a very serious Song that captured the consciousness of her audience.
“Society’s Child” became a national hit when Leonard Bernstein featured the song on a CBS TV Special in 1967.
In 1975 Janis released another song that caused some ripples in the music industry “At Seventeen” .
It was based on a New York Times article. The song is about a high school social outcast.
Janis did not want to perform the song in front of a Live audience. Why? We’ll try to find the answer on Saturday, when this talented singer-songwriter visits us on WABC MusicRadio.
We welcome Janis Ian.
