Hello my friends!
When I was working under CLIVE DAVIS at Columbia Records music publishing companies, one of my responsibilities was to work with young songwriters and sign those songwriters in hope to discover
the next ELTON JOHN or the next NEIL DIAMOND…and I did indeed discover and sign a very talented BARRY MANILOW! I signed Barry,and got him to a recording contract to a record company known today as Arista Records. When I played his first recording, a song called “Amy”, one of the vice presidents at Columbia Records said to me “Why are you recording Barry? He’s a good songwriter, but I’m not sure about singer.
My response to him was, “I’m not as much interested in how high of a note as a singer one can hit, or how powerful a voice he has or she may have…But what I was looking for was is his voice UNIQUE? Is it a voice that the minute you hear it on the radio would I be able to say this…”
Oh,I know that voice! That’s BARRY MANILOW!” And lo and behold, that is exactly the case with Barry. You hear him and you know right away who that is…it’s MANILOW! Or “that’s SINATRA!”, or “that’s FRANKIE VALLI!”, or “that’s ARETHA!”, or “that’s CAROLE KING!”, or that’s BARBRA STREISAND!” Are you now getting the idea of what my theme is on my show this Saturday night? You bet you are! Every voice you hear on the show on Saturday, you will be able to recognize from the first note! People like JOE COCKER, ROD STEWART, SAM COOK, MICK JAGGER, & ELVIS! All of them mega-stars!!! That’s because they have the most recognizable sound when they sing! A great example is when I play “What A Wonderful World“by LOUIS ARMSTRONG or “As Time Goes By” by JIMMY DURANTE… you would be a hundred percent right if you say “WOW! I can recognize that voice anywhere!” So, this Saturday night, I intend to play the most recognizable singing stylists ever recorded, and their greatest hits! You’ll hear voices like JOE COCKER, FRANK SINATRA, FRANKIE VALLI, SAM COOK, ELVIS, KENNY ROGERS, & FREDDIE MERCURY!
So, join me this Saturday night, right here on Music Radio 77 WABC…The greatest station, where you’ll hear the most recognizable voices EVER recorded , and hear their greatest hits!!!
