Hey Cousins!

Our guest this week became a cultural and fashion pacesetter in 1958.

TOM AUSTIN co-wrote a lighthearted song with Bob Gaudio celebrating a popular fashion trend. The song – “Short Shorts” reflected a cultural phenomenon, and became an anthem for youth of the 1950’s.

Their band The Royal Teens formed in 1956 in Fort Lee, New Jersey. The original lineup featured Bob Gaudio (piano), Tom Austin (drums), Billy Dalton (guitar), and Billy Crandall (saxophone).

“Short Shorts” jumped to number 3 on the charts and became the defining novelty song of the era. To this day, this playful record gives us a vivid snapshot of a major cultural event of its time.

Their follow-up single, “Believe Me,” peaked at No. 26 in 1959.

Over time, the group underwent several lineup changes, with notable members like Al Kooper joining briefly before moving on to greater fame. Bob Gaudio left in 1960 to join the Four Seasons.

Let’s welcome an original forming member of The Royal Teens – TOM AUSTIN this Saturday 3/15/25
