ROCK & ROLL CALL ๐๐โ๏ธ
Our guest this week is SHELLY CLARK. Shelly is a founding member of the 1970โs R&B group HONEY CONE. She is an accomplished singer, dancer and actor.
Shelly was surrounded by music from an early ageโher mother was a concert pianist and her father a performer from Barbados. She began her entertainment career at six and gained national attention alongside her brother as The Clark Kids, recording childrenโs music for Columbia Records and appearing in major Broadway productions like โHouse of Flowersโ by age seven.
Shellyโs teenage and early adult years were spent working as a dancer and session vocalist. She performed with some of the eraโs greatestโtouring as an Ikette with Ike & Tina Turner, leading dance revues with Little Richard, and performing or recording with acts like Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, and Bill Medley.
In 1968, Clark co-founded Honey Cone with Edna Wright and Carolyn Willis in Los Angeles. The group became one of the premier acts on Holland-Dozier-Hollandโs Hot Wax label after these legendary Motown producers left Motown to form their own company. Honey Coneโs sound merged doo-wop influences with sweet soul harmonies for a fresh take on female R&B.
Their 1971 single โWANT ADSโ was a sensation, topping both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts, selling over a million copies, and earning a gold record. Other notable hits included โStick Up,โ โOne Monkey Donโt Stop No Show,โ and โThe Day I Found Myselfโ.
Honey Cone made history as the first act to perform on โSoul Trainโ and became television regulars.
Letโs welcome this Honey Cone – Shelly Clark to MUSICRADIO this Saturday 8/30/25.
