“SPIRIT IN THE SKY,” with its uplifting and spiritual message, has become one of rock’s most recognizable and celebrated songs.
Our guest this week is singer-songwriter NORMAN GREENBAUM, widely recognized for his iconic 1969 hit, “Spirit in the Sky.”
Born on November 20, 1942, in Malden, Massachusetts.
By the late 1960s, Norman fronted the quirky psychedelic jug band Dr. West’s Medicine Show and Junk Band, scoring a minor hit with the novelty single “The Eggplant That Ate Chicago.”
After the group disbanded, he launched his solo career, and in 1969, he released “Spirit in the Sky.” The song had a distinctive fuzz guitar, gospel-inspired backing vocals, and an uplifting, spiritual message. The song achieved enormous success internationally.
“Spirit in the Sky” reached number one in many markets, sold over two million copies, and became a multi-platinum single.
Today, Norman Greenbaum remains best known for crafting one of the most recognizable rock songs in history — a track whose uplifting riff and message continue to inspire generations.
We welcome Norman Greenbaum to MusicRadio this Saturday, 10/18/25.
