The Isley Brothers are one of the few acts to have charted hits in every decade from the 1950s. The group began in the mid‑1950s as a gospel‑influenced vocal ensemble formed by brothers O’Kelly, Rudolph, Ronald and their younger sibling Vernon in Cincinnati, Ohio, before relocating to New York. They scored early pop and R&B success with high‑energy recordings such as “Shout” (1959) and “Twist and Shout,” records that helped establish them as a dynamic
major force in emerging rock and soul.
Our guest this week is Ernie” Isley, born in 1952 in Cincinnati. Initially he played bass on “It’s Your Thing” before emerging as the group’s lead guitarist and drummer. His role model was Jimi Hendrix, who had briefly worked with the Isleys in the 1960s. Ernie and his guitar gave the Isley’s the sound that became signature of the band in the ‘70’s.
They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and later received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
Ernie was honored by the Songwriters Hall of Fame, as a major contributor to modern R&B, funk and rock.
