ROCK & ROLL CALL ๐โ๏ธ๐
Our Visitor this week is KEN KNOX, musician, vocalist, and songwriter, best known as a long-standing member and current leader of the Chairmen of the Board, a soul group that rose to fame in the early 1970s. He joined the group 49 years ago. Kenโs musical upbringing in Detroit greatly shaped his early career as a saxophonist and performer before joining the group.
The Chairmen of the Board was formed in Detroit in the late 1960s under a new record label created by the famous Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team after their departure from Motown.
The group found chart success with a string of soul classics, such as โGive Me Just a Little More Time,โ which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a gold record in 1970. Other hits included โ(Youโve Got Me) Dangling on a String,โ โEverythingโs Tuesday,โ and โPay to the Piper.โ
The original lineup featured General Johnson, Danny Woods, Eddie Custis, and Harrison Kennedy, with Johnsonโs unique vocal style leading the group to major hits.
Following General Johnsonโs passing in 2010 and Danny Woodsโ in 2018, Ken Knox continued to lead the group, ensuring their musical legacy continued. Today, Ken keeps the Chairmen of the Board performing for audiences of classic soul and beach music fans. The group was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
Letโs welcome Ken Knox to our MUSICRADIO parade.
