ROCK & ROLL CALL ๐โ๏ธ๐
Cousins – We have a Mysterious Musical Moment for you this week. It involves several performers, two recording groups and a Hit Record.
The Hearts, a 1950s R&B vocal group, hit with the song โLonely Nights,โ which reached #5 on the R&B charts in 1955 and is considered one of the first true girl group hits. โฆ.and the next part of our mystery – The Jaynetts, were a Bronx-based American girl group best known for their unusual 1963 hit โSally Go โRound the Rosesโ. The recording was inspired by a nursery rhyme and almost has a ghostly legacy in music history.
Our Guest is LOUISE (Harris) MURRAY. Louise was an original member of The Hearts and a key early member of The Jaynetts.
When the Jaynetts recorded โSallyโthe producers used a rotating cast of session singersโsome recruited deliberately, others spontaneously brought in from around the studio that week creating the songโs haunting, multi-layered sound.
Sally Go โRound the Rosesโ became a major US pop hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1963 and cemented the Jaynettsโ place in music history.
The Cuz welcomes Louise Murray to MUSICRADIO.
