This Week’s Special Guest is Barbara Hawkins Of The Dixie Cups!

ROCK & ROLL CALL📞📞☎️📞 ….

”Goin’ to the Chapel and we’re gonna get married…..”. Gee, we really loved The Dixie Cups. The Dixie Cups were a New Orleans girl group that became one of the defining acts of the 1960s. Best known for “Chapel of Love,” that was awarded a Gold disc.

The  Louisiana Ladies blended sweet harmony, R&B energy, and a distinctly New Orleans spirit into a string of hits. The group began with Barbara Ann Hawkins, her sister Rosa Lee Hawkins, and their cousin Joan Marie Johnson. They first sang together in grade school, performed locally as the Meltones, and were discovered after a talent show by singer and producer Joe Jones.

Their big break – they met Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who signed them to Red Bird Records and renamed them The Dixie Cups. The Dixie Cups also scored with “People Say” and “Iko Iko,” both of which helped cement their place in girl-group history. “Iko Iko” was especially important because it drew on New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian chant traditions, giving the group a sound rooted in local culture.

They were honored with the Rhythm & Blues Foundation’s Pioneer Award in 2003 and were inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2007.

Let’s welcome original and founding Dixie Cups member Barbara Hawkins to our MUSICRADIO Show.

Saturday 4/18/26.
